Water Filtration

Hey Tampa! What’s in your Water?

On July 26th, 2017, Tampa Bay’s ABC Action News reported that the EWG (Environmental Working Group) launched a database of what was found in your water supply.  We’ve already learned that Florida is ranked #2 WORST drinking water in America, so why would it have come as such a shock to find out what was in our local water supply?

When I entered my zip code and selected my utility provider, the information provided to me made my jaw drop!  There were 4 contaminants found in my water supply that were harmful and above the health guidelines. I have a reverse osmosis in my home that is used for drinking, cooking and for our pets.  But, I wasn’t entirely sure that it would filter these harmful contaminants in my Tampa water.  I started researching.

Contaminant #1 was Chlorate.  Chlorates are the salts of chloric acid.  It’s noted on the EWG website that chlorates can be especially harmful “during pregnancy and with children”.  It’s also said to hinder the thyroid’s function.  Unfortunately, I found that there are no known filtration devices that filter out Chlorates.  WHAT?!

Contaminant #2 were Radiological contaminants including Radium-226 and Radium-228.  These can increase your chances of cancer as well as affect the development of fetuses.  Good news though!  If you have a reverse osmosis, like me, then you’re covered!  The only way to filter out Radium 226 and 228 is with a reverse osmosis filtration system.

Contaminant #3 were Total trihalomethanes or TTHMs.  This includes chemicals dibromochloromethane, bromodichloromethane, bromoform and chloroform… also cancer-causing contaminants.  These can be filtered by a simple carbon filter, drinking water system.  So, I’m EXTRA covered with my reverse osmosis.

Contaminant #4 was Chromium (hexavalent and total).  Yep… you heard right.  Remember, Erin Brockovitch?  Someone call her and have her check out our Tampa water supply.  Chromium if you didn’t already know, is also a cancer-causing contaminant.  I was extremely comforted to know that, again, I’m in the clear a reverse osmosis is the only way to filter out Chromium.  Phew!

A reverse osmosis will provide you with the purest form of drinking water, delivered right to your point of use faucet.  We have to protect ourselves and protect our family.  Your Tampa water supply is not safe for consumption.  Please take a moment to enter your zip code into the database and see what they found in your water.

Trust Yourself and Your Water

When it comes to water filtration, in my house – we take it very seriously.  As we all know, we need water to survive.  Without water, we would die in pretty short order.  But, we also know that tainted water or polluted water could make you very sick and potentially kill you.  Consider some of the recent situations in our “advanced” country; the Flint Michigan water crisis whereas the state government knowingly supplied residents with water contaminated with lead.  Recently in Florida, Mosaic Company had a gypsum pile collapse which resulted in millions of gallons radioactive contaminated water leaked into the aquifer.  It took them over a week to even notify authorities.  St. Petersburg, Florida just last year intentionally released raw sewage into Tampa Bay.  How about the boil notices that are issued by municipalities; how long has the pipe been broken before it has been discovered?  Once it is discovered, how long is it before it’s reported?  Once it’s reported, how long is it before you see or hear the report?

Reverse Osmosis is the process of filtering water to its purest form.  The process basically squeezes water molecules through a tightly wound membrane and pre-filters, and store the pure water in a storage tank.  The waste goes down the drain.   The Reverse Osmosis systems reduce most bacteria, cysts, sediment, chemicals, lead, dissolved solids, chlorine taste and odor and more!

When it comes to protection for me and my family, I choose to trust myself and filter my water with a reverse osmosis system sold by The Pampering Plumber, 13128 State Road 54, Odessa, Fl 33556 – 727.232.8400

Water Softeners and Filtration in Tampa

As I plumbing contractor, I am pretty well versed in regards to water softeners and filtration.  I am also an owner of and user of equipment.  I am on a well and I have, in this order, two sediment filters, a 45,000 grain water softener for my four bedroom house, and a reverse osmosis system at our kitchen sink.  Our water is normally pretty good, but in a well situation, the water quality has periodic changes depending on rain and other weather situations that might affect the aquifer.   Typically, we will change our sediment filters about once per quarter.  Our Reverse Osmosis filters will be changed about once per year.  The salt in our brine tank has to be replenished about once every three weeks and more often when we have guests and are using more water.

My wife has blonde hair and can immediately tell by her hair color when the iron level changes in our water supply.  How do I know when the iron in the water changes?  Well, just trust me on this one, I know..  Not only do I “find out about it”, I pay for it by way of hair products and salon visits to get the color back to what it should be.  Sometimes a little softener cleaner takes care of the problem, other times, using a salt with an iron inhibitor will solve the problem.  In more severe situations, an iron filter will be added which can get fairly expensive.  In any event, it can be treated so that everyone is happy, and we all know the old saying, “when the mamma is happy, everyone is happy”!  Next week I will touch on the signs of hard water and what it does to skin, clothes, appliances, and literally everything it comes in contact with.  Water is life.  Clean water is clean life.
